One of the world’s largest defense, space and security businesses, Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) develops innovative solutions that address evolving capability requirements. The ability to provide customers with the right solutions at the right time and the right cost drives our worldwide success.
Our rich portfolio of products and services, tailored to India’s unique needs, includes the P-8I multi-mission maritime patrol aircraft, C-17 Globemaster III strategic lift airlifter, the heavy lift CH-47F Chinook helicopter, the combat-proven AH-64 Apache attack helicopter and weapons.
On January 1, 2009, the Government of India signed a contract with Boeing Defense, Space & Security to purchase eight P-8I long-range maritime reconnaissance and antisubmarine aircraft. The P-8I is an India-unique variant of the U.S. Navy’s P-8A Poseidon and offers India the full range of maritime surveillance and patrol missions. Boeing has delivered all eight P-8I aircraft to the Indian Navy on schedule.
In June 2011, India’s Ministry of Defence signed an agreement with the U.S. government to acquire 10 Boeing C 17 Globemaster III airlifters. The deal is the largest defense contract to have been signed by the Indian government with the United States. Boeing has delivered all 10 aircraft to the Indian Air Force.
The India Ministry of Defence has finalized its order with Boeing for production, training and support of Apache and Chinook helicopters that will greatly enhance India’s capabilities across a range of military and humanitarian missions. India will receive 22 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters and 15 CH-47F Chinook heavy-lift helicopters. Both are the newest models of those aircraft. But sales are only half the India success story. Boeing is forging partnerships with numerous enterprises in India, both directly and through its extensive network of suppliers, to enhance the country’s aerospace and defense industry.
Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has delivered the Indian-designed Data Link II for the P-8I. Data Link II is a communications system that enables exchange of tactical data and messages among the Indian Navy aircraft, ships and shore establishments. BEL has also delivered the identification friend-or-foe interrogator, a battle management system that enables the aircraft to distinguish friendly aircraft and forces. Finally, BEL is on contract to provide F/A-18 flight deck cockpit panels. Electronics Corporation of India (ECIL) has provided the speech secrecy systems for the P-8I.
Dynamatic Technologies (DTL) has been working on the P-8I since 2010 and has since expanded to include the manufacture of critical ram and pylon parts for the CH-47 Chinook since 2013.
Boeing has also signed an agreement with TASL to create a joint venture (JV) that will manufacture aerostructures for aircraft and collaborate on integrated systems development opportunities in India. The JV will initially create a manufacturing center of excellence to produce aerostructures for the AH-64 Apache helicopter and to compete for additional manufacturing work packages across Boeing platforms, both commercial and defense. The agreement is significant because it demonstrates Boeing and TASL’s commitment to expand its aerospace manufacturing footprint in India and explore the development of aerospace technologies in India.
Beyond direct work placement, Boeing collaborates with Indian industrial partners on Lean manufacturing techniques and Boeing’s Program Management & Supplier Management Best Practices as part of its drive to bring the best of Boeing to India and the best of India to Boeing.
